At Container Deposit Systems, we believe that hands-on experience plays a vital role in developing the next generation of skilled professionals.
One of the young people currently building that experience with CDS is Mitchell Hunter, who joined our team while studying Year 11 at Findon Technical College. Through his time with us, Mitchell has gained practical exposure to the engineering and manufacturing environment while working alongside experienced technicians and tradespeople.
When Mitchell first joined CDS, he was keen to expand his knowledge of the fitting industry and better understand how automated machinery operates. Since then, he has been involved in a variety of workshop activities, gaining valuable experience in mechanical assembly, equipment operation and engineering processes.
One of the aspects Mitchell has enjoyed most is the opportunity to learn something new each day while being supported by the people around him.
As part of his development, Mitchell has been building a broad range of practical skills, including mechanical assembly, safe operation of workshop equipment, problem solving, time management, and understanding workplace safety procedures and regulations.
Working alongside experienced team members has allowed him to see firsthand how technical knowledge, precision and teamwork come together in a manufacturing environment.
When I joined CDS, I was hoping to learn more skills within the fitting industry and learn how to work and control the automated machines.
“I have learnt that teamwork is very important when working on different aspects of this job, such as changing belts on assemblies, communicating when operating machinery, and taking responsibility for mistakes and working together to solve problems.”
Like many people entering the industry, Mitchell has also encountered challenges along the way. Learning new equipment, processes and assembly techniques has helped him develop resilience and confidence while continuing to expand his capabilities.
Looking ahead, Mitchell plans to continue building his career through an apprenticeship after finishing school and sees his experience at CDS as an important step towards achieving that goal.
Beyond the technical skills, it is often the everyday experiences that leave the biggest impression. One of Mitchell’s favourite memories at CDS was a light-hearted moment shared with colleagues from Electrical Solutions, when everyone gathered around the table to play Wordle and see who could solve it in the fewest guesses.
These moments reflect something we value at CDS: creating an environment where people can learn, contribute and feel part of a team.
