The Victorian Government recently announced that they will be introducing a Container Deposit Scheme to be implemented in November 2023.
In 1996 a football club was born under the name of Peel Thunder, playing in the WAFL. The club not only treasures four wins in the seniors league, but they are also highly committed to the community.
What is the purpose of this initiative?
A container deposit scheme is a recycling program designed to encourage consumers to return their eligible used beverage containers for recycling and reduce the number of beverage containers that enter our environment or landfill.
How does it work?
The scheme aims to incentivize consumers to recycle their used beverage containers by providing a financial reward for doing so. This reduces the amount of litter and waste generated by these containers and promotes using recycled materials in new products.
Step 1. Consumers purchase beverage containers at retailers.
Step 2. The community return the eligible empty containers to a depot facility to be sorted.
Step 3. The community receives a 10c refund for every eligible container.
Step 4. Containers leave the depot to continue their journey of being recycled and remanufactured into a new product.
Social enterprises can benefit from the scheme
What makes Container Deposit Schemes even better is the fact that the revenue generated by the scheme is also used to fund recycling infrastructure and programs, as well as support charities and community groups.
The technology provided by Container Deposit Systems helps depots automate the counting, recognition and classifying of containers accurately and rapidly. This technology is automatically integrated with the state-specific scheme.
Container Deposit Systems also offer Cash Redemption Terminals able to dispense cash as well as depositing into a Scheme ID or donating to an organization, thanks to its integration with the state scheme.
A Container Deposit Scheme is not only beneficial for the businesses joining, but it is a great source of funding for social enterprises, not-for-profit organizations, community groups and charities.
In Summary
A 10c refund scheme is already on the table and will be implemented before the end of 2023. Some scheme details, including the collection points, are yet to be finalised. Still, the government has been working closely with industry and community groups to develop a successful scheme, and we are all ready to see it rolling.
